I really wanted to like this. For one thing, I was lucky enough to receive it as a Goodreads giveaway. Secondly, the author seems like a really nice bloke and has obviously put a lot of work into the cover, formatting, etc.
I have to be honest, though. The first hint of trouble was a typo in the very first sentence: "any more" run together to make a single word. Then there are the clunky (and grammatically dreadful) sentences. Blue jeans, trainers and a hoody "...was all that the young lady of a mere nineteen years old wore". Ouch.
There are many clunky sentences and they do kill both the suspension of disbelief and the flow, even when they aren't as silly as this: "Then, since he saw that Jen was going to intentionally ignore what he was trying to tell her, the albatross sighed sorrowfully and regretfully, if that were even possible, and spread his vast wings as wide as they would go."
As for the plot, when the second and third characters appear it is very, very clear where this is going, and it's very well-worn territory indeed. Anita Shreve and Lionel Shriver have both used this basic idea and done much more with it and much better than Turner manages here. The ending is an exercise in the obvious.
I hope that this author will pay a professional editor and proofreader in future to sort some of these problems out.
I'm going to pass my copy on in the hope that someone else will enjoy it more than I did. This is, after all, just my opinion.
